The Book That Shifted My Perspective on Time.
The Book That Shifted My Perspective on Time
After watching the movie adaptation, I was hooked on the story. I had to read the book that inspired it. Wolf Küper takes the readers in his book “1 Million Minutes” on a journey through minutes of life just for what truely matters.
How long is 1 Million minutes?
I’ve never really thought of longer time in terms of minutes, except when it comes to waiting for something or timing an event. Wolf Küper, or Wolfie as he goes by in the book, asked himself too after his 4 year old daughter, Nina, wished to have a million minutes together to enjoy the wonderful things in life.
To put it into perspective:
1,000,000 minutes = 16,666 hours
16,666 hours = 694 days
694 days = 30 months
30 months = 2.5 years
Two and a half years. It is a long time to accomplish many things. We could check off many items from our ever-growing to-do lists, learn new skills, complete work projects, and make relationships. Making strong resume to climb the professional ladder further and further. Only sky is the limit.
But What About Life?
Where we draw the line? If we keep pushing, trying to achieve more and more, are we really living? If we don’t use our time for the “wonderful things” that matter most, what’s the point? We often tell ourselves that we’ll get to those things later. But “later” is a synonym for “never”.
Küper writes in the book (my rough translation from German):
“Ever since Nina started her campaign for one million minutes, I’ve begun to question where my time goes.” He is one of those professional people with excellent time management skills. “To-do lists are the devil. They don’t save time; they make it disappear.”
He’s absolutely right:
“The truly important things don’t even make it onto the silly to-do list.”
Reading this made me pause and look at my own to-do lists. I have a few of them for different aspects of my life. They miss some pretty important things. Reading books, going for a walk after rain, looking at stars, calling home every now and then, going on a date with my partner, cooking your favorite food, etc. All the things we can call life.
Finding Time for What Really Matters
I’ve noticed how easily my minutes slip away, consumed by things that add little value to my life.
I can easily spend hours scrolling through social media or falling down the YouTube rabbit hole. It drains my energy and makes me unmotivated to do anything else. Or ruminating over awkward social encounters after they’ve long ended. Or compulsively checking the news multiple times a day, even though a brief catch-up every few days would suffice. The list goes long.
None of these activities hold real meaning for me, yet they steal many minutes each day. What if we can reclaim all of these minutes? All the minutes can add up to one million for only wonderful things in life — the things that make us feel alive.
